About me

I am a consultant psychiatrist: a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. I have practised for over twenty years in Ireland, the UK and Hungary. Alongside my consultant post at St John of God University Hospital in Dublin, I run my own practice, Seaward Clinic.

As a psychiatrist I can make a diagnosis, and prescribe and monitor medication. I do not offer psychotherapy myself: the Dún Laoghaire Therapy Centre, where I see patients, is home to psychologists and psychotherapists who do, and there are other psychologists and psychotherapists outside the Centre to whom I can refer you.

Most of my work is with adults living with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder or bipolar disorder, often after treatments that have not helped enough, and with adults who suspect they may have ADHD. Whatever brings you here, you can expect time, plain answers and decisions taken together.

How I work

My approach is evidence-based and neuroaffirmative: treatment follows Maudsley, NICE and British Association for Psychopharmacology (BAP) guidance, adapted to the person, and difference is not treated as deficit. A diagnosis is made against the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 criteria, and I explain the findings clearly, whether or not one is made. I review and reduce medication as readily as I prescribe it, and for depression that has not responded to medication, neuromodulation is considered.

Your GP stays part of your care: I ask for a referral letter or your GP’s details because I will contact them, and with your consent a letter follows every assessment and medication change.
